Major Soil Works: ONCE YOU have decided on your new design and drawn it on your plan, you may need to get professional help with any major soil works or hard landscaping.
• Don't try to do every thing yourself if you do not have the expertise to do so. In the long run, it is much more time- and cost-effective to get professional help. When the time comes for the major fixing, mow at a height of one inch. Eliminate obvious low spots by lifting a few turfs, packing good soil beneath and replacing them. Then, with an ordinary iron rake (or better still a Cavex rake), scarify the soil surface, removing as much dead grass, leaves and other debris as possible. If the soil is compacted, aerify it using a spiked roller, a special hollow-tined aerifying fork or a regular garden fork jabbed in to make holes a few inches apart.
From the very beginning the availability of water was a major factor in determining the type and quality of the local agriculture. In many areas irrigation had to be practised from the beginning. However, coupled with the problem of irrigation was the nature and suitability of the soil. Man soon learned that intensive cultivation exhausted the soil and this reduced the value of irrigation. |
