Materials Resembling:

Materials Resembling Centipede needs little room; use small glass vivarium box (see Part IV); house alone. Cover bottom with 1-2 inches of soil topped by materials resembling habitat where centipede was caught; for example, if caught between damp old boards, that is what should be placed on soil. Keep habitat slightly damp at all times.

The marked distinction between aspirates (resembling Danish p, t, k) and nonaspirates (resembling French p, t, k) is hard for English speakers, who aspirate some stops (as p in pin) but not others (as p in spin), to grasp. The common citation of such English words as uphill, hothouse, and blockhead is misleading, since they contain two consonants in two separate syllables, whereas Greek aspirates were single consonants. Stop-sibilant clusters seem to have involved some special modification of pronunciation, since they were represented by special characters: ^ for ps; f for ts in Cretan, but in general—out of line with the others—for dz possibly, or zd; and £ for ks.

Venetian glass was exceptionally light and delicate. Most of it was the product of the blowpipe. Because of its thinness it was never cut, but was modelled into extraordinary shapes, made in every variety of color, and ornamented with applied forms resembling dolphins, flowers, wings, stems, and leaves. Much of the Venetian glass was enamelled and gilded in pictorial, foliage, or abstract patterns. Other surface finishes included net, crackled, marbled, lace, and spiralled effects. Through the migration of Venetian workmen to neighboring countries and especially to Flanders, imitations of Venetian ware became widespread, and this fact, combined with improved materials and processes for glassmaking in other countries, eventually ruined the Venetian industry.
