Mead House Named: Uppsala, only an hour from Stockholm by express, is one of the world's little giants of history and culture. Here, as I have said, Odin held court, and in Gamla (Old) Uppsala, two or three miles from the present city, are three interesting hillocks, or barrows, traditionally called memorials to Odin, Thor and Freya. Tourists come here to drink mead, a concoction of malt and honey, in a mead house named Odinsborg.A mixture of fermented honey and water forms mead, once a popular drink in northern countries where grape vines did not flourish. During the late Middle Ages beer was introduced and this eventually relegated mead to the home brewers' shelves. The name mead is derived from the Sanskrit word for honey, mehdu. which may indicate that mead originated in the Middle East or Asia. Loire [6] next and finally reached the Rhine, Mosel and Champagne. All the early developments were in the river valleys, the natural lines of communication, which the Romans cleared of forest and cultivated. Wine is a heavy commodity to carry and boats would have provided an efficient means of transport. Of the great French wine regions, only Alsace and Champagne do not have Roman origins.
Catholics are also especially interested in an old house in Amsterdam whose upper portion was a secret meeting place of persecuted Catholics during the Reformation and which became a private Catholic church, remaining in use until 1887. It was named the House of Our Dear Lord in the Garret and today, as the Amstelkring Museum, it houses an unusual collection of religious relics and curiosities. |
