The principal alloys are bronze, a combination of copper and tin; brass, a combination of copper and zinc; and pewter, a combination of tin and lead. Sometimes a small quantity of a third metal is added to these alloys for special reasons. The more valuable Metals and metal hardware, such as gold and silver, are often used for surfacing or plating baser materials. Chromium, a very hard gray-white metal, is seldom used in its pure state, but is usually alloyed with another metal or used for surface plating.
