Mixed With Leaf Mold:

Mixed With Leaf Mold History. By 1850 the English had developed a wooden mold that doubled cigar production, and the mold had gained general acceptance by 1880. In the 1890's machines were introduced for partial removal of midribs of leaf and for stacking the leaf flat (in books). The suction table, also introduced in the 1890's, aided in cutting the wrapper but, even more significantly, it moved the industry from homes to factories. At this stage the cigar, originally spread by soldiers, sailors, and immigrants from Europe, became the object of advertising.

Green snakes are hardier when given plenty of room; use large reptile cage (see Part IV). Cover bottom with thick layer of pea gravel topped by 2-3 inches leaf mold. Provide several potted shrubs and large, well-branched limb for climbing. Construct retreat of low, flat rocks, piled casually over each other and leaning against flower pot. Place large piece of sod planted with tall grass on top of leaf mold at one end of cage. Place cage where it receives some direct sunlight daily; protect it from overheating and chilling.

Top-dressing is a form of fertilizing. In a sense it is mulching, too. It differs from regular fertilizing in that more material is applied to each unit area and from mulching in that less is applied. An annual top-dressing benefits all lawns; more than one a year is essential for creeping bent. For top-dressing use good topsoil mixed with leaf mold with one third to one half its bulk of compost, sedge peat, peat moss, leaf mold or very well-rotted manure. Add some sand if the soil is heavy and a slow-acting fertilizer such as pulverized sheep manure, cottonseed meal, bonemeal or tankage. Make sure the ingredients pass through a half inch screen and are thoroughly mixed with leaf mold.
