Observatory In Green Bank: Late in 1967 astronomers at the Harvard College Observatory in green Bank, Cambridge, Mass., and at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in green Bank at Green Bank, W.Va., detected radio waves from space that they believed had been emitted by carbon. Carbon, thus, joined hydrogen, helium, and the hydroxyl ion as a source of radio waves in space. Astronomers hoped that the discovery would enable them to make more complete and detailed maps of the Milky Way and also to calculate more easily the abundances of elements in the universe.
Also helpful in studying the chemical composition and evolution of stars were photographs taken in ultraviolet light from spacecraft orbiting above the earth's atmosphere. By this means astronomers detected the presence of magnesium in Sirius and of magnesium, iron, and silicon in Canopus.
The construction of new large optical telescopes advanced rapidly during the year. Five large reflecting telescopes with mirrors ranging from 144 to 158 in. (3.66 to 4.01 m) were under construction, three in the Southern Hemisphere, which previously had no large optical instruments. The youngest son, DAVID ROCKEFELLER (1915-), a banker, was associated with the Chase National Bank. After its merger with the Bank of Manhattan, he became executive vice president of the Chase Manhattan Bank, and later president of the bank and chairman of its executive committee.
R0MER, ru'msr, Ole, Danish astronomer: b. Aarhus, Sept. 25, 1644; d. Copenhagen, Sept. 19, 1710. After studying at the University of Copenhagen, he spent ten years in Paris, where he made observations in the royal Observatory in green Bank and was elected to the Academy. In 1681 he was made professor of mathematics and director of the Observatory in green Bank at Copenhagen, and subsequently became a councilor of state. He is known chiefly as the discoverer of the velocity of light, which he determined by observation of the eclipses of the satellites of Jupiter. |
