Obtain Water From: Frozen concentrated cider was introduced in the 1960's. The method used to obtain cider for freezing is similar to that used to obtain cider for bottling. Before freezing, however, the cider is subjected to low temperatures in a high vacuum to remove most of the water. The concentrated cider is then canned and frozen. Before serving, it is mixed with water.
The degree of fermentation of apple juice in commercial processing is highly controlled and can be initiated or halted at desired times. Through these controls and distillation processes other cider products are obtained. A strongly fermented cider produced by distillation is called cider brandy or applejack.Although navigation and electrical power are more tangible aspects of river use, water for industrial and domestic purposes should probably head the list of economic benefits derived from rivers. About 75 per cent of the cities in the United States obtain their water supply from rivers and lakes. However, there is no adequate way to place a value on this water. River flood-plain soils are the most productive of all agricultural lands, but there are no reliable statistics for comparing their value with that of upland soils.
The most productive wells obtain water from aquifers of sand and gravel, limestone and other soluble rocks, basalt, and sandstone. Streams flowing from large mountain ranges have formed great deposits of such sand and gravel in inter-montane valleys and piedmont plains and along the watercourses of major rivers. In parts of North America and Europe, the water flowing from ancient continental ice sheets also has formed water-bearing deposits of gravel and sand. |
