Office At Albany: Roosevelt's wartime popularity swept him into the governor's office at Albany in the election of 1898, but the New York Republican machine, headed by Senator Thomas C. Platt, had no love for him, and welcomed the opportunity to "kick him upstairs" by nominating him for vice president in 1900 instead of permitting him to have a second term as governor. His most important victory over Platt was a law taxing corporation franchises. His younger brother, Robert, earl of Fife and later 1st duke of Albany, exercised the real power until 1399, when the king appointed his elder son, David Stewart, duke of Rothesay, lieutenant of the realm. A feud developed between uncle and nephew, and in 1402 Albany procured a warrant for the arrest of Rothesay in King Robert's name. Interned at Falkland, Rothesay died that year, presumably starved by his ambitious uncle, who resumed the regency.
Richardson's first commission, received in October 1866, was for building the Church of the Unity in Springfield, Mass. The design of this church is the only instance of his following Gothic models. Although the church is somewhat typical of English Rural Gothic, it also presents certain independent features that show the practical bent of Richardson's mind. Shortly afterward, he built the Boston and Albany Railroad office in Springfield and Grace Church in West Medford, Mass. |
