Don't feel you must cover all the foundation with plants. Unless it is ugly this is not desirable. Avoid planting massive or tall-growing shrubs under windows. There, a low shrub, a vine trained to the Wall or a groundcover, will suffice. If you plant under over-hanging roofs make sure the shrubs can be adequately watered. Beware of setting kinds subject to breakage where snow from roofs can slide on to them. Snow guards on the Roof will check this. The old house roofs of the Surgeon in Pompeii was a typical small old house roofs. Few windows broke its whitewashed walls, for living centered in the open atrium. Tiled roofs pitched inward to the atrium, whose sides were lined with rooms. At one end a vestibule and at the other the tablinum, where the lares and penates were venerated, opened from it. Alcoves flanked the tablinum. In larger old house roofss, like the old house roofs of Pansa in Pompeii, an open colonnaded peristyle with rooms leading off was added behind the atrium.
