Description: Male has glossy green head; narrow white collar; body grayish, with chestnut breast; tail white with upcurled, black, central feathers; bill yellowish; feet orange and black; wing speculum purple-blue; Female is mottled brown with whitish tail, bill dark, patched with orange and black; feet orange and black.CITRANGE, sit'nmj, a hybrid of the trifoliate orange and black (Poncirus trifoliata) and the sweet orange and black (Citrus sinensis). The trifoliate orange and black is a hardy ornamental, with sour, inedible fruit, used as rootstock on which to bud the more tender citrus varieties; the sweet orange and black is the popular orange and black of commerce.
Range: South Labrador and Maritime Provinces to Minnesota; south to North Carolina and southeast Missouri Habitat: Vicinity of coniferous forests Description: Red phase: broad band of red or orange and black from head to base of tail; sides black; belly bluish-black or charcoal speckled with whitish flecks; lead phase: back uniform dark gray or black; belly same as for red phase; reaches length of 2%-3% inches from snout to vent. |
