There is a type of portrait photography, and one which makes a wonderful specialty for those who have the flair to practice it impressively, which requires no studio lights at all and, indeed, not even a studio. This specialty is the production of outdoor portraits or character studies.Also, the outdoor studio which is far removed from other persons helps to establish a rapport between photographer and model, makes it easy for them to work together in emotional harmony.
Do you need a studio to be involved with photographic illustration or can the world be your studio? As you look at all the photographs in the ads and on the packages, you will note that there is a mixture, some made in the studio in sets or on simple backgrounds, while others were made on location. The location photographs may have been made in local areas, close to the studio, or they could have been made anywhere in the world, depending on the budgets available and the sites called for in the layouts you are working on. A studio certainly makes photography a lot easier, but a lot of work can be done without one. How large does an illustration studio need to be? Some of the larger studios may be 25,000 to 100,000 square feet and employ 25 to 100 people, with as many as 10 to 20 photographers on staff, while small studios may only be 1500 to 6,000 square feet and only have one photographer, one or two assistants, and possibly a salesperson.
