Over Plants And Push: Use screen-wire insect cage constructed with z pans (see Part IV). Fill bottom pan with moist soil.
Use lamp chimney cage (see Part IV). Fill flower pot with loose, damp soil. Push geranium or rose branch down into soil. Slip lamp chimney over plants and push firmly into soil. Place twig with eggs among branches of plants. Cover chimney top with small piece of cheesecloth and tie securely. Moisten soil from time to time to keep plants fresh.Space all plants of one kind 1-2 inches apart. Best plan is to plant tall growers at back facing window, shorter ones at sides, leaving front space open for observation. Push roots of plants down into sand (a little water poured over sand makes planting somewhat easier); weight down the plant stems by pushing small rocks into the sand against them; otherwise, animals uproot plants. Take care to leave plant crowns uncovered.
Capture: Spider never jumps; when disturbed, it retreats to farthest corner of its ragged web; push broom into web against spider, which usually remains quietly among bristles; with small stick gently push it from broom into quart jar The black widow spider is included in this discussion, first, because it is the only spider that is, to date, known to be deadly to man; second, because it is so common across the country that children should be taught to recognize it (knowledge is necessary for protection); third, because it can be easily maintained in captivity without fear, and its habits observed. |
