Over The City -state: The development of the Greek city-state may be divided into four periods: (1) the period in which the foundations were laid (1000-800 B.C.);
(2) growth of the city-state (800-500 B.C.);
(3) the apex of city-state civilization (500-404 B.C.); and (4) decline (404-338 B. c.).The population of the Chicago metropolitan area represents practically two thirds that of the state of Illinois. The city is the seat of Cook county, and some of the gover the city -statenmental functions of the city are shared with the county. At the same time the city often finds itself in political and legislative difficulties with the state gover the city -statenment because of its unique size. There are no other large urban areas in Illinois. Chicago is 30 times more populous than the next-largest city in the state, Bockford. The result is that for political purposes Illinois is considered to be divided between the Chicago area and "down-state," which means everything outside the Chicago area.
The city retains a colonial flavor and receives many visitors interested in inspecting the old mines or the Alhondiga de Granaditas, a former granary that served as a fortress. The state university is located here. In addition to tourism, the city's economy includes toy making, pottery, textiles, and metalworking.
