Overlying Cover: Afterward, they were uplifted to form mountain peaks and exposed to the surface as the forces of erosion stripped off the overlying cover. There is excellent evidence that these granites may have originally come from even deeper levels in the crust and made room for themselves by intruding into, displacing, and changing the rocks that formerly occupied the space where the Granite is now found. It isn't necessary to rake the surface perfectly smooth before or after sowing any of these crops but rake them in so that most of the seeds are covered. When top growth is six to twelve inches tall, spade the cover crop under or bury it with plow or roto-tiller and immediately refertilize and sow another cover crop. Don't turn the last of the cover crops under later than six weeks before sowing the permanent grass seed.
When grading operations are finished there should be an even layer of good top-soil overlying the subsoil. It should be a minimum six inches thick and better eight or more. This even distribution cannot be attained by having a bulldozer, scoop or other implement or tool move the surface soil only. If this is all that is done when the grading is completed the topsoil will be disproportionately thin in the hollows and thick at the elevations. |
