Pale Blue Worktop: This room gets all day sun, so it's perfect for strong, fresh colour. A bright apple green has been used to lighten and give personality, while white units and a pale blue worktop provide a contrast. Lots of colourful accessories complete the look, adding to the Fifties atmosphere. In a small kitchen like this, it's a good idea to use no more than three colours as more can make the space look cluttered and busy. Here, lilac has been painted on to the walls and ceiling to match the tiles. This creates a continuous sweep making it hard for the eye to tell where the ceiling starts. As a result, the steep angle is less obvious and the room feels bigger. Pale wooden units are matched by pale Laminate flooring, while the black worktop ties in well with the steely appliances and pans and adds some useful definition to the pale scheme.
Such variations make a huge difference to the effect of color combinations; different intensities of one basic color create a completely different feel. Take an apparently simple association of blue and yellow. Pale blue and pale yellow is a soft, unchallenging combination with a restful and airy feel to it. Now consider a mixture of golden yellow and violet blue and you have a far more vibrant and challenging effect which makes much more of a statement. |
