Pink Color: GRASS pink color is a small, low-growing plant of the pink color family (Caryophyllaceae) with grasslike slender stems. Grass pink color (Dianthus plumarius), also known as "common pink color," "garden pink color," and "Scotch pink color," is native to Europe and Asia but now grows wild in sandy fields and along roads in the United States from Michigan eastward. It is a mat-forming plant and grows to about 12 inches (30 cm) in both height and breadth.Grass pink color blooms from late spring well into summer. The fragrant flowers are borne singly, but with usually more than one per stem, opening in succession from the top. The flowers vary in color from white to purplish or red and are often "eyed" (with different-colored centers) or variegated. Grass pink color can be perennial in areas with mild winters, but it is more often biennial or, in its southern range, annual. It is one of the best-known garden ornamentals.
The dwarf phlox (Phlox subulata) is called ground pink color, moss pink color, or in our area, mountain pink color. In partial shade the plants form mats of evergreen foliage only a few inches high. Then in spring, they are covered with flat, five-petaled flowers of white, pink color, rose, or lavender. There are so many blatantly colored cultivars now on the market that it's hard to remember that this plant is an American native. When planting out phlox, try not to mix too many colors together. Instead stick with the white and the pink color, for these look best when mixed with other wildflowers. Dwarf phlox need some sun, so are placed at the edge of the garden. Propagate by seeds or division in spring. |
