Plant Will Grow Against:

Plant Will Grow Against In addition to their light requirements, plants need adequate moisture in the air. Except for desert varieties, all plants grow best where the relative humidity is 40% and over and are adversely affected by air drought where the relative humidity is under 20%. Before buying a plant, one should learn its botanical name, for its common name may be used for several different plants. Knowing the correct name of a plant enables one to learn about its culture by consulting a reference book or a plant dealer. Before buying, one should examine the plant for insects and diseases. This does not mean, however, that one should always reject a plant because it has a few yellow leaves, for all plants lose old leaves now and then. If the plant is bought on a cold day, it should be wrapped well to prevent it from being nipped by frost on the way home. On a hot day, plants should not be placed in the trunk of a car because they may be damaged by heat.

The rockspray cotoneaster (Cotoneaster horizontalis) is a hardy shrub (Cotoneaster is a Greek word meaning "like a quince" and refers to the leaves in some of the species resembling those of a quince tree) of great garden merit. A young plant will grow against a bank keeping only inches off the ground. Eventually it will carpet the area with overlayered branches of a herringbone pattern each covered with shiny deep green leaves. At this point the plant will start to grow up to a height between 2 and 3 feet. It will also—if trained—grow against a Wall without being fixed, or if planted on the edge, pour over like a waterfall. Flowers in June are small, pink, and easily missed but in the fall, the whole shrub is covered with bright red berries that will persist into spring.

Once a framework has been formed, the most important objective is to keep the climber in check—lateral shoots may grow up to 12ft in a single year and unless this over-exuberant growth is pruned, the plant can soon become a jungle of stems and may grow too large for its allotted area. Severely pruning a wisteria during winter will only encourage even more rapid growth.
