Plants With Desirable: In self-pollinated species mass selection has largely been replaced by pure-line selection and hybridization. In pure-line selection, which is chiefly used in the development of new crop species, plants with desirable characteristics are selected to produce offspring and these progeny allowed to self-pollinate for several generations.
Hybridization in self-pollinating plants initially involves the selection of parent stock and their cross-pollination. Each of the chosen parents usually possesses desirable characteristics lacked by the other. The amaryllis lily makes a fine show for two weeks, then has straggling leaves for the rest of the year. After flowering, planting out in the garden in a sunny situation with rich soil is desirable. Plants should be brought indoors before the frost. Ferns, eucharis lily, begonias, fuchsias, geraniums, and pelargoniums are all well within the growing capacity of the amateur. Pepper plants, and solanum (Jerusalem cherry), have brilliant red fruits, and remain decorative for several weeks before the fruits wither.
FOR CULTURAL reasons, some plants need a special environment: many alpines need a rockery, scree bed or Sink garden, while bog plants require damp soil and aquatic plants depend on water. In a small backyard, you may not have room for more than a few plants of each type. |
