Plastic Cover: If the lights have been submerged, remove the glass or plastic cover, drain water, and dry the interior with cloth or paper towels. If you can't remove the lights and it's necessary to submerge them, cover the entire light housing with a plastic bag secured with rubber bands—this is better than no protection at all. Check wiring for cracks and breaks; replace as necessary. Be sure connectors are clean.A good coat of colorless nail polish on a regular wire hanger will keep it from rusting. This type of rust-free hanger takes up much less room than plastic or wooden ones. Bear in mind that the metal hanging hook of a plastic or wooden hanger can also leave a rust mark on a garment, and should also be coated with nail polish. Coat hooks, if not plastic or plastic-covered, can be given the same rust-proofing treatment.
The tops of all cans on board should be marked with a water-proof pen. Moisture can cause labels to fall off and "pot luck" ceases to be fun after a day or two. Any kind of paper packaging is not for boats. Transfer things like flour and sugar to airtight plastic containers, and mark their tops. Or put the paper package into a tightly tied plastic bag. If you've got some heavy-duty plastic bags, incidentally, you can stuff them with canned foods, seal them, and drop them into the bilge for storage. In that way, you'll never be without variety for your menus. When It Comes to Pots and Pans |
