Poetic Style: Style. Gruner's work went through three general phases. The first was marked by a poetic charm and a subtle handling of color. Later his compositions became more constructive and better organized, with emphasis on form. In the third stage he returned to a more poetic rendering while retaining the improved arrangements in composition. Throughout, his subjects were unmistakably Australian in character, and his work, which has been widely reproduced, represents a contribution of great importance to Australia's art.Contemporary literary criticism is found mainly in the casual but illuminating remarks of the poets and prose writers in their conversations, letters, and private journals. During the declining years of the age, which were marked by a belief in art for art's sake, there developed a vogue for gleaning famous lines of great masters in handbooks called shih chii t'u (samples of poetic patterns). Some of the editors of these books showed sound critical sense, but the great critic of the age was Ssu-k'ung T'u (837-908). In the twilight of T'ang, as if for its swan song, he wrote in superb, impressionistic verse, with the choicest metaphors and similes, a book of criticism called Poetic Characteristics (Shih P'in), in which he presented the 24 qualities to be desired in poetry. Because of its trenchant aphorisms and melodious style, his work became a kind of formula for Chinese poets.
GONGORA Y ARGOTE, gong'go-ra e iii-go ta, Luis de (1561-1627), Spanish poet, who was one of the greatest Spanish lyricists of all time. He was famous for his complex poetic style, known as Gongorism (also called culteranismo), which was widely emulated by Spanish poets and writers during the baroque period. |
