Post Office: Telephone Services. The first British telephone schange was opened in 1879 in London by The elephone Company, Ltd., but in 1880 the high >urt ruled that private telephone services were i infringement on the post office's monopoly ?hts in telegraph. In 1960 the Providence post office, the first fully mechanized post office in the nation, was dedicated. The Rhode Island Family Court held its first session in 1961. Governor John H. Cha-fee (Republican), who had served three successive terms, was defeated by Democrat Frank Licht in the 1968 election. |
