Presence Of Black Area: The climate of an area is its characteristic weather considered over a long period. Climate depends first on latitude, which determines whether an area is hot or cold and how strongly marked are its seasons. It depends also on the moving air masses that prevail in the area; these may be purely local in origin or they may have moved into the area from several hundred kilometres away, bringing cooler or warmer, wetter or drier conditions with them. Climate is also influenced by the relative distribution of land and sea, high ground and low, and the presence nearby of forests, lakes, valleys, glaciers and many other physical factors.Range: Second tier of states west of the Mississippi to the Rocky Mountains, with an isolated colony in the sand region near Havana, Illinois, southward to New Mexico and adjacent northeastern Mexico Description: Identified at once by presence of black area covering central portion of abdomen; reaches length of 25 inches Habitat: Always found in sandy areas regardless of whether it is plain, hill, river, or grassy meadow land Reproduction: Oviparous; 5-24 eggs, depending on size of snake, deposited July-August. Range: Eastern United States, southward from New Hampshire to central Florida; westward through Ontario to Minnesota, and present in all the first tier of states west of the Mississippi Description: Body brown, red, or yellow with large patches of dark brown or black from neck to base of tail; patches become half rings on tail; alternating small blotches run along each side; sides of abdomen spotted with black; abdomen yellowish or greenish; great variation in color and pattern from dark gray to slaty black with no patterns at all; reaches length of 42 inches Habitat: Thickly wooded, dry, sandy areas, preferably on hillsides or so-called uplands Reproduction: Oviparous; 6-42 eggs, depending on size of female, deposited June-August Range: Eastern Bade County, Florida Description: Back with 17 black saddles on body, 8 on tail, with small, round, alternating spots along sides; light area below spots; reaches length of 30 inches Habitat: Palmetto and limestone flat woods; in hothouses, and in truck crop fields Reproduction: Oviparous Range: North Carolina southward to central Florida; northwestward to Indiana.
