Berlin, known before the war for its hectic-bright and sometimes perverse night life, has recaptured its electric gaiety without restoring, to any extent, the old depravity. Resi, in the American sector, is one of the world's largest and most spectacular nightclubs. Before the war, the earlier Resi was in what is now Communist Berlin, but to meet Western postwar trade it was rebuilt, in four months in 1951, in its present location in West Berlin (rather remote from the Kurfiirstendamm hotels; taxi necessary).CHOOSING THE location for a sculpture is extremely important if the work is to look effective. The best approach is to decide where you want an object and then set about finding a piece that will suit the location. However, more often something irresistible is acquired which must be accommodated in an appropriate setting. Some pieces will dictate a likely location: a Bacchus will look most effective reeling out of the bushes, while a formal statue is ideally placed in a niche or in a more commanding position such as on a pedestal or balustrade.
The basic "error" of a compass is called variation, defined as the difference at any location between true directions and magnetic directions as measured by a compass unaffected by local influences. (Although the term is common, it is not truly an "error," but an unavoidable condition.) Variation is different for different locations on the earth; at each location it is nearly constant, but does change very slightly over the years. Variation will be either east or west, and must be labeled "E" or " W" as appropriate; it can be as much as 60° in extreme locations. The amount of variation in any area is indicated on charts by compass roses (see Chapter 5, "Charts"). Variation is the same for all vessels in a given area.
