Propagation And Grow Ing: The only variable feature of this form of Propagation and grow ing is timing. As a general rule, the best time is directly after flowering, as this is when the new vegetative shoots are being produced and the new root system is developing. In very late-flowering subjects, spring Propagation and grow ing is advised.Propagation and grow ing and growing: sow seed in late spring, in well-drained, rich soil. If seed is not required, remove the flower stems as they appear. Self-sown seedlings will grow freely if the plants are allowed to flower; if not, propagate them by dividing the parent plants approximately every three years or so. The seeds are ready to harvest when they have turned a gray-green color and have hardened. Cut off the whole flower head and dry slowly indoors.
To understand the breeding and improvement of fruit species it is necessary to realize that in almost all cases the varieties which form the basis of a breeding program, and of fruit growing itself, are maintained by vegetative or asexual Propagation and grow ing as opposed to sexual Propagation and grow ing— reproduction directly from seed. Since an individual produced directly from parental seed does not "breed true," that is, it fails to exhibit the precise characteristics of the parent, it is necessary to produce new plants by means of vegetative Propagation and grow ing, the new plants being grown from shoots, buds, cuttings or scions removed from the original plant. In some cases, that of the black raspberry for instance, the shoot tip may root while still attached to the mother plant, after which it may be removed and replanted in the nursery. |
