Quebec City Region:

Quebec City Region Quebec's first railroad was built in 1836-1837 in the Montreal region. The province now has approximately 5,000 miles of railroads, all operated by two big companies: the Canadian Pacific Railway and the federally owned Canadian National Railways. The railway network is focused on Montreal, Quebec, and Sherbrooke. The first road, between Quebec City and Montreal, was completed in 1730-1735. Today there are 45,000 miles of roads (excluding city streets) ; three fourths are improved. All major roads are kept open in winter.

The population in 1966 was 5,780,845. The capital is Quebec (1966 population, 166,984; metropolitan area, 413,397). The largest city is Montreal (city, 1,222,255; metropolitan area, 2,436,817), which is (after Paris) the world's largest French-speaking city. Other important cities are Ville de Laval (196,088), Verdun (76,832), Sherbrooke (75,690), St. Michel (71,446), Hull (60,176), St.-Laurent (59,749), and Trois-Rivieres (57,540). The name Quebec is derived from that of Quebec City, having been extended from the city to the province in 1867, when the Canadian Confederation was formed.

In 1966 its production came from 54 plants—11 pulp, 33 pulp and paper, and 10 paper mills. The leading producing areas are the St. Maurice Valley (Trois Rivieres, Shawinigan, Grand'Mere, and La Tuque), the Lake St. John-Saguenay area (Kenogami, Jon-quiere, Port Alfred, Riverbend, and Dolbeau), the Ottawa Valley (Hull, Gatineau, Masson), the Quebec City region (Quebec City, Donna-conna, Beaupre), and the north shore of the St. Lawrence (Baie Comeau, Clarke City).
