For the past 17 years, the Brick Industry Association has sponsored one of the country's most prestigious architectural award programs - The Brick In Architecture Awards.
As the only national association to represent both manufacturers and distributors, BIA is the authority in the clay brick industry.
As such, the Brick In Architecture Awards has become the nation's premiere architectural award featuring clay brick. As such, the Brick In Architecture Awards has become the nation's premiere architectural award featuring clay brick. There are countless projects around the country that demonstrate excellence in brick masonry, and these outstanding examples deserve to be recognized.
BRICK red-brick walls can be constructed in several different ways depending on the type of "bond" used. The different bonds are chosen partly for their decorative quality and partly for the strength they give a wall; for example, a retaining Wall supporting a hillside must be a double thickness, whereas one supporting a shallow flower bed can be a single thickness. A Wall consisting of more than one thickness of brick must have ties through the Wall to prevent the two layers from pulling apart. The tie bricks, which show their ends, are known as headers. Those that are laid lengthways are known as stretchers. The various bonds illustrated below are running bond (top), Flemish bond (center), and English bond (bottom), all different combinations of headers and stretchers. The running bond is used for single-leaf red-brick walls. |
