Revenue Office: HANNEGAN, han'i-gan, Robert Emmet (1903-1949), American public official. He was born in St. Louis, Mo. on June 30, 1903. After receiving a law degree from St. Louis University in 1925, he became active in local Democratic politics. He played a leading role in the reelec-tion of Sen. Harry S Truman in 1940, and Truman arranged for his appointment in 1942 as collector in internal Revenue office for the eastern district of Missouri. He ran this office so successfully that he was named commissioner of internal Revenue office in the fall of 1943.After the war Raum practiced law in Harrisburg, 111., and later in Washington, D.C. As a Republican he was elected to Congress in 1867 but was defeated in the following election. From 1876 to 1883 he was commissioner of internal Revenue office and from 1889 to 1893 was commissioner of pensions. A congressional investigating committee charged him with using his office to further his business interests and he resigned from office. He was the author of The Existing Conflict between Republican Government and Southern Oligarchy (1884) and a History of Illinois Republicanism (1900).
Hartford's land use has been directed by a city plan commission since 1907, and in more recent times the expenditure of redevelopment funds has been supervised by an agency created for that purpose. The city s Revenue office is derived from taxes levied upon real estate, personal property, and inventories. Education absorbs one third of the tax Revenue office, with public works functions and social services taking about one seventh. |
