Originally the site of a Sauk (Sac) Indian village, Rock Island the city was first settled in 1826 and incorporated as Stephenson, the county-seat, in 1835. Its name was changed to Rock Island in 1841 and a city charter granted in 1849. In the 1840's and 1850's Rock Island was a true river town, with heavy river traffic and rafts of lumber at its door.
