Romanesque Style Used: The Romanesque style used to be thought of interest only as a prelude to the Gothic, and as such a style of merely transitional character. This point of view changed in the early 20th century to a realization of the independence and greatness of the Romanesque as one of the major styles of the world's architecture, and it is now considered quite as imposing and significant as the Gothic.Trinity Church in Boston, begun in 1872 and finished in 1877, shows the perfection of Richardson's individual style. This style evolved from his study of the Romanesque churches of southern France. The church is cruciform in plan, but the distance from apse Wall to facade is only a little in excess of the distance between the two walls of the transepts. A departure from the Gothic revival style popular after the Civil War, this highly personal Romanesque style of Richardson's had a powerful effect upon subsequent designs.
When Henry Hobson Richardson designed Trinity Church in Boston (begun 1872), he turned to the Romanesque style for inspiration, in the belief that the ruggedness of the earlier style was suited to a young and vigorous country. Elements derived from the Spanish Romanesque Cathedral of Salamanca and from the French Romanesque styles of Auvergne and Provence are identifiable, but these eclectic traces are subordinate to a powerful organization of masses and volumes. |
