Scottish Border: ROB ROY, a romance of the Scottish border, written by Sir Walter Scott and published anonymously in 1818, takes its name from the famous Highland brigand, Rob Roy Mac-Gregor Campbell, who is at the time of the story engaged in the Jacobite plots which led to the uprising of 1715. The narrative is put into the mouth of Francis Osbaldistone, son of a London merchant. Exiled to the home of his uncle, near the border, he falls in love with high-spirited Diana Vernon, thus earning the hatred of his cousin Rashleigh Osbaldistone, who is at first an adherent of and later a traitor to the Jacobite cause. This article deals with the Anglian element of Scottish literature, composed chiefly in languages descended from the Northern dialect of Middle English (see preceding section, Languages) and emerging as Lowland Scots or Standard English, or a mixture of both. Scottish Gaelic literature is reviewed under CELTIC LITERATURES— Scottish Gaelic Literature.
