Small Green Plants:
In the wild, painted turtles feed on larvae of aquatic insects, such as caddisfly, dragonfly, aquatic flies; water beetles, water fleas; fairy shrimp, baby fish; small green plants water snails, tadpoles; aquatic plants, such as duckweed, algae, milfoil, elodea, etc. Give bits of raw fish, small green plants earthworms, meal worms cut in pieces, young of top minnows, small green plants water snails, aquatic insects, small green plants strips of raw liver, pieces of aquarium plants if available, cut-up bits of fresh, green vegetable tops, cut-up bits of waterlily pads. Keep piece of fresh, green lettuce on water at all times.In the wild, cooters and sliders feed on aquatic insects, aquatic plants, small green plants fish, aquatic snails, and tadpoles; adults feed more heavily on plant life than do turtle young. Plants that have their roots on the bottom of a pool and their leaves floating on the surface are known as deep-water aquatics. These plants are of less ornamental value than water lilies, with their large exotic blooms, but they help keep algae at bay. Aponogeton distachyos (water hawthorn) (z9—10) has very fragrant, "forked" white flowers and oblong-shaped leaves, and Hottonia palustris (water violet) (z5—9) has white or lilac-tinted flowers and large whorls of bright green leaves. There is a range of plants with yellow flowers, including Nuphar lutea (yellow pond lily) (z5—10), which has small green plants, bottle-shaped, yellow flowers and leathery, green leaves, and Nymphoides peltata (water fringe) (z7—10), which has delicately fringed, buttercup-yellow flowers and round, purple-mottled leaves. Along with the leaves of water lilies and deep water plants, floating plants help to cover the water's surface to reduce the amount of sunlight that algae thrive on.
