Surveyor 7 demonstrated the remarkable versatility of its remotely operated engineering systems. The spacecraft carried both the alpha-scattering and the soil-sampling devices. This proved fortunate because the alpha-scattering instrument became stuck in its stowed position and had to be deployed to the surface by the soil sampler. The various movements of the devices were then monitored by a television camera. In addition to carrying out trenching and other tests, the soil sampler moved the alpha scatterer twice to allow chemical analyses of an undisturbed soil surface, a small rock, and, finally, a dug-up sample of soil.Growing between 1 and 4 feet tall depending on the soil and the individual character of each plant, the flowers sport many petal-like rays of deep purple.
