Standard Rose Is Budded: A standard rose is budded on young lateral shoots at the desired height, close to the main stem of the briar, For a bush rose the budding is done at ground level on two-year-old briar seedlings. Once the bud comes into growth, the gardener trims away the rest of the briar to concentrate the plant's whole activity into the developing scion. He may also graft stem cuttings to the briar; this is in fact normal for ramblers and some other climbing types.Water gardens provide the opportunity to experiment with aquatic and moisture-loving plants. As well as those plants that actually grow in water, there are also those that are happiest on the edge near water. Choose from ferns, water lilies, irises, and many more for a dreamy, magical quality. A rose garden is always a delight which appeals to the romantic side in us all. Roses come in a great many different shapes and colors. They can be standard or climbing, delicate or brash, scented or not. These pages look at the many different types of rose that you can plant to achieve stunning effects. You will not only be impressed—you will also be inspired!
Ever since the Middle Ages the pope has, on Laetare Sunday, blessed a golden rose which he bestows on some beneficiary. Some Italian writers have declared that the term sub rosa is derived from the fact of consecrated roses being placed over the confessionals at Rome to denote secrecy, the rose being a symbol of silence. In legend, Saint Dorothea, who suffered martyrdom under Fabricius, made a convert of Theophilus by sending him some roses from paradise. The rose is an attribute of Saints Casilda, Elizabeth of Portugal, Rose of Lirna, Rose of Viterbo, Rosalia, and others. |
