Sturdy Black: All quail are rotund with sturdy legs and feet and a short but stout decurved bill. Their plumage is softly colored, the dominant color is various shades of brown mottled or vermiculated with white, black, or chestnut and blends very well with the color of the ground and the grassy fields or brushland which they inhabit. In some American species the crown is ornamented with a long, straight, black plume or a jaunty, little, forward-curling one. Quail are almost entirely terrestrial and fast on foot, seldom resorting to flight, although they can fly swiftly when disturbed. The American species occasionally takes to a tree, but the common quail of the Old World do not perch. In counterpoint to the delicacy of highlights are sturdy blacks, particularly of flower stems thrust in water-filled glass containers. One critic complained of "the effort needed to pierce the 'atmosphere' of the Table top on which rests a black melon."47 These photographs were far removed from conventional, easy to grasp still-life studies.
