This Water Missing: Why is this water missing on Venus? The answer is not clear, but it is believed to be related to the fact that the temperature of the stratosphere of Venus is substantially higher than that of the earth's stratosphere; this would result in a greater rate of escape of water through dissociation by ultraviolet radiation from the sun.Antietam, Sept. 17, 1862, fought in western Maryland about 55 miles (180 km) northwest of Washington, D. C. This was the climax of Gen. Robert E. Lee's first invasion of the North. Gen. McClellan's Army of the Potomac intercepted the invading Confederates at Sharpsburg. The ensuing struggle was the bloodiest one-day battle of the war. The armies fought to a stalemate, but Lee retired to Virginia. Federal losses were 2,108 killed, 9,549 wounded, and 753 missing. Confederate casualties totaled 2,700 killed, 9,024 wounded, and about 2,000 missing.
Bull Run, Second, Aug. 29-30, 1862, fought on virtually the same ground as First Bull Run. Gen. John Pope, leading a Federal army of 45,000 men into Virginia, was flanked by "Stonewall" Jackson's corps and then assailed by the combined forces of Jackson and Lee.. The Federals were decisively defeated and suffered casualties of 1,724 killed, 8,372 wounded, and 5,958 missing. Confederate losses were 1,481 killed, 7,627 wounded, and 89 missing. This victory gave Lee the momentum to embark on his Maryland (Antietam) Campaign. |
