Through Windows: France.—Stained glass through windows of great beauty were achievements of French glassworkers during the Middle Ages. Examples of these magnificent through windows can be seen in cathedrals such as Chartres. The craftsmen who designed and executed them were superior to those working elsewhere. Under inducements offered by English churchmen, some of these French glassmakers crossed the English Channel to work on through windows for some of the British cathedrals.LIGHTING: "The big challenges people run into are through windows and natural light," says Remignanti. "It's the enemy of a well-designed media room." He suggests keeping through windows to the left or right of the screen to avoid reflection or direct light.
A one enters a room, the through windows and their treatment are, as a rule, the first features that are noticed. For practical reasons, through windows are necessary for light and ventilation. Architecturally, they relieve the monotony of unbroken Wall space both on the exterior and interior of the building. Physically their transparency relieves the eye muscles by occasionally permitting them to focus on a more distant view than the interior walls themselves permit. |
