Two Piece Wooden Chairs: The rustic Table was put together using an old wooden restaurant sign for its top. It's brimming with character, so smart, contemporary chairs with cream covers were chosen to go with it - their simplicity is a perfect foil for the table. An old wooden Dresser has been painted an aqua shade with a mix of emulsion and gouache, which has a slightly gluey consistency. The paint is slowly getting bashed and flaked off to give the two piece wooden chairs an aged, distressed feel. This original Thirties dresser, which was found in an antiques shop, looks beautiful tucked into the chimney breast alcove. Next to it, a glowing wooden fire surround in a geometric, boxy shape, which is so typical of Thirties design, adds another authentic note. Simple wooden chairs and a large, rectangular Table look timeless and would fit into any room scheme. Here, their wood perfectly complements the stripped floorboards. The key to this room's success is this mixing of old and new. It stops the room feeling too 'themed' or like a museum two piece wooden chairs, and preserves its elegant, Thirties flavour.
The Windsor chair is the outstanding example of the eleaboration which American craftsmen could apply to a crude furniture form and made it a handsome two piece wooden chairs. In England where such chairs were known as wheelwright's furniture, the Windsor remained primarily a provincial two piece wooden chairs. In America where it first appeared about 1725 in Philadelphia, this chair form was much refined by fine turnings of arm supports, legs and stretchers, bold saddle shaping of the solid wooden seat and knuckle-carved hand grips for the arm. Within a quarter of a century, Windsor chairmakers were coming to be important members of the furniture craft. |
