Unexpected Materials:
Advances in one area are tied in with or spur advances in other areas. Seemingly isolated discoveries often combine to bring unexpected solutions to particular problems. They can be fitted together to form new wholes that are greater than the sum of the parts or lead to other unexpected innovations.
The unexpected discoveries or applications are called serendipitous.3 Effects that combine or interact are called synergistic. Too often, we underrate them.The small amount of water vapor measured by Venera 4 is puzzling but not unexpected. Prior to the flights there was indirect evidence against an abundance of water on Venus, based on changes in the intensity of microwave radiation from the planet. According to current theories on the origin of the planets, however, the materials out of which Venus was formed contained as much water as the materials out of which the earth was made. In the case of the earth, the water in the oceans is believed to have been trapped originally in the earth's interior.
The editors of Architectural Record are calling for entries for the 2006 Kitchen & Bath Portfolio. Entry is open to any registered architect who has recently completed an innovative kitchen and/or Bath project. Of interest are projects that feature unexpected materials, address unique client needs, or are designed in a manner that allows these utilitarian spaces to be both functional and beautiful. There is no fee.
