Vernacular Building Type:
The Heinz Architectural Center's first exhibition to focus on a single vernacular building type, Barns of Western Pennsylvania: Vernacular to Spectacular presents a wide variety of objects to reveal the complexity of a deceptively straightforward building form.Then came Liu Yung (c.1035) and Su Shih, who in their different ways enriched and liberated the tz'u genre. Liu, repudiated by the court as a vulgarian, but beloved as a popular bard of singsong girls, townsfolk, and villagers, wrote in the vernacular on the universal theme of love. Su Shih, unrestrained by elaborate rules, burst into bold songs, some heroic and others of an ethereal beauty. The vernacular tz'u verses of Huang Ting-chien (1045—1105), disparaged by his contemporaries as overly rustic, were relished in later times. The last great tz'u writer of the Northern Sung dynasty (960-1126) was Chou Mei-ch'eng (1057-1121), who developed many novel techniques.
The West German pavilion at Expo 67 explored the principle of cable-supported tent structures and thereby opened up an untapped, unexploited building type, which will have an inevitable influence on future design and construction. Although the tent is as old as recorded history, the West German building marked one of the first times it has been built with modern materials and construction methods.
