Water Began: Early the next spring I added water to the pot and set it in a sunny spot in the greenhouse. Activity began within two weeks and a sheathed and speckled shaft burst through the dirt and continued to grow—it seemed—inches a day until on May 22, a 20-inch spathe began to open about a taller spadix, all standing on a 3-foot stem. A massive invasion of flies began, while a pervasive odor wafted through the Wall between the greenhouse and our living room.As a test, only the Pump on the raft was started to see if it could do the job without the booster. Undoubtedly, without the 70-ft precipice there would have been no problem; with it, however, both pumps were needed. As water began flowing from the well, expedition members put measuring rods in the shallow water around the banks.
The engineers discovered that the surface water was slightly alkaline before pumping started. Within hours after pumping began, however, the water became increasingly more acidic at the surface and at various depths. If the water passed through limestone it was bound to become more alkaline, but in this case it was becoming more acidic at lower depths. The engineers knew, therefore, that water returning to the well from the discharge area was passing through acid soil. If acidity continued to build up, a dangerous condition might exist because of its corrosive effect on the equipment, especially the pumps. |
