Well-drained Soil Which: A beautiful, well-maintained lawn is a valuable feature of a great many gardens, and does a lot to enhance their intrinsic beauty.
Ideally, the best site is open to the sky with no large trees nearby but, failing this, it should not be shaded for more than half the day in summer The soil should be reasonably well drained; waterlogged land must be drained first. If sowing grass seed by hand, mark out the lawn in 3/4ft wide strips with string and stakes. If the soil is very fertile and has been weeded once or twice beforehand, allow /> oz of seed per 3ft2. If the soil is less rich and has not been weeded before sowing, double this quantity. Nothing need be done until the seedlings are well grown if the soil is moist. If the surface dries out before germination, use a fine spray or lawn sprinkler.Grapevines grow well on a wide range f soil types. However, they do not grow well i heavy clay, shallow, poorly drained, alkali, or igh-boron soils. V. vinifera varieties are deep-acted and should have a loose soil structure, /hich favors extensive root development. The sputed influence of soil type on the quality of tie wines in certain areas of Europe may be more factor of soil drainage and higher soil tem-eratures than an effect of soil per se,Climate.
Zoysia matrella, Manila grass, has the texture of Kentucky bluegrass, is propagated by sprigs planted six inches apart, needs close mowing. It is shade tolerant, needs well-drained soil which soil of high fertility and is resistant to diseases and pests. It turns brown in winter. A disadvantage is that it spreads and forms a good turf slowly. Hardy as far north as Washington, D. C. Zoysia japonica, Japanese lawn grass, and its improved variety, Meyer (Z-52) Zoysia form good fine-textured turfs, are increased by plugs or sprigs, are shade tolerant, need well-drained soil which soil of moderate fertility, withstand drought and are disease and pest resistant. Mow at height of one to two inches. Turns brown in winter. • |
