Wood -grain: When staining wood -grain, it is advisable to test the stain on a scrap of wood -grain, or on an area that would normally be out of sight. It is notoriously difficult to remove stain, even immediately after it has been applied.
If the wood -grain has an open grain and a smooth finish is required, then you will need to use a grain-filler to fill the pores. The alternative is to apply extra coats of the finish, sanding with an abrasive paper between coats. Fill any cracks or holes in the wood -grain with a wood -grain-stopping material before applying the stain.GRAIN ELEVATOR, a building or complex of buildings equipped for handling and storing grain. The term "grain elevator" is sometimes used to denote only the automatic equipment used for handling the grain. Grain elevators are used primarily for storing wheat and corn. They came into extensive use shortly after the middle of the 19th century and now are common sights at railroad junctions throughout grain producing areas, grain markets, major lake ports and seaports, and grain milling ( flour) centers.
All articles made of wood -grain need treating with a preservative or finish, not only to preserve and protect the surface but also to bring out the inherent beauty of the grain and the texture of the wood -grain itself. The finish of the wood -grain is an extremely important factor. Although painting would hide any slight surface defects, any blemish in wood -grain is immediately accentuated when a clear finish, or a stain followed by clear finish, is applied. It is important, therefore, that all wood -grainwork is clean and smooth before decorating work begins. |
