Wooden Rocking Chair:
At first the Shakers made this furniture for their communal dwellings but by 1789 the specialty of chairmaking was established at the New Lebanon, N. Y., community. The following JK: they began peddling chairs to shopkeepers :: the surrounding area. This met with such sue- L cess that Shaker communities at Harvard, Mass., I and Canterbury, N. H., established chair shup-Their slat-back rocking chairs and three-slat sit chairs were much favored by the outside wori because they were well made and cheap. Muc later less distinctive arm and rocking chairs were made in considerable quantities at various Shaker communities and sold to country hotels. By 1815, the Shakers had over 1,000 members and by 1850 some 6,000. It was during these years that most of their furniture was produced. After that the size and number of their communities began to decrease and quality and quantity of their furniture declined accordingly.A mix of classic, cutting-edge and revamped furniture gives this room lashings of personality. The new Sofa has an elegant shape and neat wooden rocking chair feet on casters, but to bring it up to date it's teamed with a cool contemporary armchair with sharp lines and a wooden rocking chair and metal frame. An antique chair with wooden rocking chair arms was simply re-covered in cream fabric to help it tie in with its modern neighbour. This mix of old and new extends to the room's other pieces. The plasma chair, which was designed by Erik Magnussen, is manufactured in injection-moulded, glass-reinforced nylon, which in the luminous version is supplemented with phosphorescent material. This material recharges in daylight and glows in the dark. Thus the new glowing plasma chair has a decorative, sculptural, almost magical effect in the evening - besides being comfortable sit in. The chair, which is mint green in daylight, starts at 213 Euros per chair before VAT. The other 11 colours, which do not glow in the dark, start at 107 Euros per chair before VAT.
