Writing Materials:

Writing Materials It is known that the Rig Veda was composed by many different generations, and Max Miiller believed that for a long period after its composition it was transmitted orally from one to another, and was not set down in writing until a much later date, since it contains no allusion to writing or writing materials. Of the four Vedas the Rig Veda is by far the most important, not only on account of its greater antiquity but also because of the information which if contains.

(6) the uniformity (or lack of it) in the writing; (7) alignment, that is, the relationship of the writing to a real or imaginary base line; (8) spacing between letters, words, and lines of writing, as related to each other and to the overall size; (9) the speed and manner of execution; (10) the basic writing system employed, such as Palmer Method, Spen-cerian, or modern manuscript writing; (11) the proportional size of letters and their component parts; (12) raising of the pen from the paper; (13) patchings (or reworking of strokes) and re-tracings; (14) tremor, hesitation, and uncertainty; (15) position of the pen; (16) arrangement of the writing on the paper; (17) indications of unusual writing position and the degree of apparent care in preparation; and (18) the influence of fatigue, sickness, age, intoxication, or other modifying factors.

Small-seal characters are written in uniform size, and its strokes are of even width. Its cumbersome rigidity and formalism were softened by the next innovation, li shu (clerical style), which facilitated the execution of characters. Since this early formative period, there has been no basic change in the structure of words; later emphasis was placed on the style of strokes. Also, improvements in the manufacture of writing brushes and in materials, such as paper, silk, and ink, helped turn the technique of writing into an art.
